Puppy Mills - Why Are These a Thing?

We know puppy mills are super F'ed up, right? OK, but watch out, because many "breeders" are posers. Not just in the south, but even in Cheesetown, WI.  There are 100,000+ dogs (all sizes, all ages, all breeds [even the fancy ones!]) looking for homes - so the existence of a factory of disease and suffering to make more dogs is asinine.

Straight talk: If you love dogs but support these repulsive operations with your money, you are acting pretty stupid and maybe you are drunk. Are you drunk?

Animal Rescue Corps is a nonprofit animal protection organization. Read this recent puppy mill bust story. Spoiler alert: it's heartbreaking. Non-spoiler alert: it's common - this is not even a special case. So messed up.

Their facebook page has more information if you're interested.

Lori, who runs Fluffy Dog Rescue, suggested ways to avoid supporting these mills. I added thoughts in green:

  • Rescues will either spay or neuter or will pay to have the pup spayed or neutered at a later date.
  • Pro tip: If you are not getting a pup that is spayed or neutered, you are buying it from a breeder.
  • Don't buy on the spot (even if you think you're in love) - go home and do your research. Falling in love with a dog is extremely easy - you can do it again and again, trust  me.
  • Contact your Humane Society to find out who you are buying from. You can contact the local Humane Society in the community where the rescue/breeder/puppy mill is (how? wuddup, google) and you will shortly find out if you are buying a mill pup. This humane society site will provide more information.
Help stop the perpetuation of animal cruetly, suffering, and illnesses. SHUT THE MA'FAs down!
